Chrissy and Matt~ July 18, 2009~ Blacksburg, VA

Chrissy has a super fun last name to say “OH-PEA-ELLA”. Best to use with an Italian accent and raise your right hand up and shake it a bit for the full effect. Try it!
We found ourselves repeating her last name frequently as we juggled two Chrissy’s and a Kristen for brides just weeks apart. One of those situations where Ryan and I would be talking about our summer brides and constantly be interrupting each other with, “Which Chrissy?” OOOOOOHPEAELLA (although it is spelled different than my phonetical way). Love it!
So in all honesty, we never laid eyes on these two until we showed up to Virginia Tech campus to shoot their wedding. It didn’t matter, we instantly fell in line with the laid back vibe of their wedding party and cruised through the day with plenty of laughs in tow.
Both Matt and Chrissy are alums of VT so they thought it only fitting to celebrate their big day on the beautiful grounds of their alma mater. I have lived in Virginia for 14 years and never been to Blacksburg…I can’t believe it. What a gorgeous little town and campus. They used the Memorial Chapel for their ceremony and the Inn at Virginia Tech for their reception venue.
So July weddings can go one of three ways in Virginia. Hot as the 5th ring of hell, muggy and rainy as the Congaree Swamp, or surprisingly mild and breezy. I’ll take door number three for $1,000 Bob. We had the most AMAZING weather the day of Chrissy and Matt’s wedding. In fact, by sunset, it was downright chilly and I needed a sweater. A SWEATER IN JULY IN VIRGINIA…have you ever???? We were loving it. So without further ado…..Matt and the former Ms. Opiela!
This field had the most amazing black-eyed Susan’s and dreamy lighting.
Chrissy’s adorable sister Carol.
Snuck in a shot of Kenny, our extremely sweet and kind intern (aka photography wench). We will be shooting his beach-side wedding next September! I will refrain from making any comments about him shooting Nikon instead of Canon.
Matt is in the middle, can you tell which two are his brothers? It’s all in the eyes!
Flats…and why not? So cute and comfy.
This shot Ryan took. I was SOOOO hoping he did this (must be an ESP thing with husband’s and wives). He was in the back of the church and he had the right lens. I kept thinking how great it would be to get a close-up of the priests robes….uploaded the pictures and didn’t Ryan deliver a cool shot of it! High fives Ryan.

Mother and daughters.
Ryan acted as a stand-in for the bride to model the bouquet.
Hey hot mama!
Chrissy and Matt were unable to exchange vows that they wrote in the church ceremony so they decided to do a private vow exchange (well as private as standing in a public location with two photographers documenting everything!).
This is where I knew we were kindred’s with them. I don’t know exactly how it went down but for some reason they both put their heads down at the same time and cracked noggins and it broke the seriousness of the vows into a round of hysterical laughter.
Back to serious.
The field…it sucked us back in like a tractor beam.
These two showed everyone up on the dance floor. They could cut a rug!
There is one thing I have learned since living in Virginia. UVA fans are UVA fans to the core and Tech fans are Tech fans to the core. Chrissy and Matt were no exception. They actually arranged a surprise at their reception and had the Hokie Bird, Virginia Tech’s mascot, come visit. Of course they did the traditional “Hokie Pokie” with the Hokie Bird
Although we don’t bleed orange and maroon…we decided to jump in for a shot.
Chrissy had a signature drink made in honor of her wedding. I thought it would be fun to incorporate it for one of Ryan’s signature ring shots.
Chrissy and Matt…fun, fun, fun! What a great wedding day we had with you. Thank you for welcoming us into your fold so effortlessly. We hope these long awaited images brought back floods of great memories from a beautiful July day. Blessings on your new marriage!
