Alea~Lifestyle Portraits

posted by Kelly

When I was 19 I had a perm, gigantic teased early 90’s hair (representing upstate NY well!) I was boy crazy, talked too much, and was selfish. Now I had great qualities too but when I think back to how immature and silly I looked, I cringe.

We got an email from a young lady, Alea, a few months ago. She was finishing up an internship with Walt Disney World and was driving home to New Jersey in May. She loved our style and wanted a lifestyle session worked into her travel agenda as she was passing through Virginia. Ummmm…yes please!

We met up with Alea and her dad on Saturday morning. It was a hazy, foggy, drizzly, dreary morning until the most amazing shoes emerged from her jam-packed car.

Attached to those shoes was the most adorable, sweet, soft spoken NINETEEN year old!

I’m gonna be honest, I would be a wretched bouncer. I would NEVER have guessed she was just a freshman in college and still a teenager. I would have guessed like 25 years old at least! ALTHOUGH…and this is the BEST although….she thought I looked 23. (taking a bow) I am just shy of my 35th b-day so that was literally the most amazing compliment ever! Apparently, my crows feet aren’t as obvious as I thought. I digress….

So Alea wanted us to give her two distinct looks for her shoot. An urban and a rural location. We started out in our humble little downtown to acquire the urban look first before she transitioned into her very feminine sundress and bare feet. So without further ado….this is urban Alea for you.

****Sidenote…we get asked often about how Ryan and I shoot together. Do we shoot differently? Can we tell our work apart? Do we favor different lenses? Do we process our images different? The answer to ALL of that is a resounding YES! We shoot very differently indeed. We can usually tell our work apart at a glance. He favors primes while I tend to shoot with adjustable lenses. I do 95% of our editing due to division of duties in Kellan but for this post Ryan pulled some of his own images and edited them in his own style. I am going to label our images with “Kelly” and “Ryan” ABOVE the photo for you to see the differences in angles and processing and lens choice.

I have to stop and give MAD PROPS to her father, Ralph. He generously lugged equipment and lighting and held the softbox for us. Such an unbelievably helpful and sweet man. You are amazing Ralph and mad our morning a 100 times easier!

We moved to our friends farm adjacent to the cabin. They had a one week old lamb that Alea agreed to hold. He was a wet and muddy but cute none the less!

So there you have it! I hope you enjoyed seeing the difference in shooting and editing style. It may seem small to pick up the different nuances but I assure you it is huge to us. That is part of the husband wife team we have had to work hard at…adapting a style that reflects both of us and is cohesive at the same time. And just for a fun fact, because Ryan is 16 inches taller than me, and our clients can attest to this, he frequently stands right behind me and shoots the exact same time. So I literally back into him and step on his toes all day long but we are still able to get the angles we want at the same time. That’s what our freaky height difference gives us…equal opportunity!

Alea, you were the bomb! You are fierce in front of the camera with your confidence and yet vulnerable expressions. You go from looking so intense to the SWEETEST dimpled girl within seconds. We had soooo much fun with you and your dad. Thank you for driving WAY out of your way to spend the morning with us. Here is one for the road.

These were fun!

Seth and I are the same way….we each bring something different to the table but we both really need each other.

So, I’m assuming you brought all the props to the abandoned house? :)

Her shoes rocked!

Okay, I might be slightly prejudiced (being her mom….), but these shots are AWESOME!!! and as beautiful as Alea is naturally, you caught her very essence - a sweet, gentle, loving and fun young lady. Thanks, guys! Great, great, great!!! job….

Love, love, love this shoot. She’s so cute, and the styling & posing is just fantastic, as always! :)

On a slightly related note: The artist who installed the public art piece, if I recall correctly, loves how her art changes based on the viewer’s perceptions and interaction. She exhibited at Riverviews before completing this work. I’ve taken brides there, and have a ton of sessions I’d like to do someday…it’s really a magical little interlude in the city!

I love these pictures. The both of you have an incredible eye. Again, maybe a bit prejudiced because Alea is my 2nd cousin…but adorable. I especially love the one with Alea and her Dad.

What a wonderful gift to give to herself! She is so beautiful and elegant. Could clearly be a fashion model. Love the artistic photography and the butterfly ring.

WOW !!! I am extremely impressed with the quality and diversity of the shots. Of course, you had an amazingly talented and beautiful subject, but you brought out her inner beauty as well. (Another predjudicial commentator, I am Alea’s Aunt Lorraine) She brought her own style (LOVE THE SHOES) and grace to a great collaboration. THANK YOU so much for showcasing my wonderful, lovely niece.
